Many scientists believe silicone hydrogel is a game-changer in the contact lens industry. Not only will this material increase user comfort, designers believe silicone hydrogel could significantly improve a patient’s corneal health.
The main reason doctors are interested in using silicone hydrogel is because it’s far more oxygen permeable than traditional soft contacts. This means silicone hydrogel lenses are great at increasing the amount of oxygen that reaches the cornea.
The new generation of `super oxygen permeable` Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses can transmit six to seven times more oxygen through to your eye than conventional soft contact lenses, so are much healthier for your eyes.
In addition, Silicone contact lenses contain less water than conventional soft lenses, so are less prone to drying out, are more resistant to protein deposits and have easier handling due to the greater rigidity of the lenses.
Interestingly, the cornea is one of the few organs that has no direct blood supply. This means the cornea relies heavily on a steady supply of oxygen for its nutrients.
Obviously, contact lenses naturally restrict the amount of oxygen that’s able to penetrate a wearer’s corneas, as they lie between the cornea and the air.
There will always be some degree of oxygen restriction while wearing contacts, but silicone hydrogel is the most permeable material available. Doctors believe this highly breathable material is the best way to naturally keep a person’s corneas healthy throughout the day.
We have a great selection of silicone hydrogel contacts to choose from. Some of the silicone hydrogel contacts in our collection are good for daily use, like Dailies Total 1, while others are for continuous use (night & day) like Air Optix Plus Hydraglyde or monthly wear lenses designed to be removed each evening - but offering superior oxygen transmission during the day like Crystal Comfort. There are even a few lenses in our collection that help patients suffering from astigmatism, for example Air Optix for Astigmatism.
Take your time exploring all of the options our website offers to find the ideal lenses for your eyes. Of course, if you have any further questions about silicone hydrogels, always ask your optometrist for professional guidance.
